Books On My Spring 2019 TBR

Hello again! I dropped off the face of the earth a little for a while, but I am dipping my toe in the water again with today’s Top Ten Tuesday*. I have lots of posts planned, so make sure to check back soon to see some more lovely book content! Today, the topic is ‘Books On My Spring 2019 TBR’.

This one I found exceptionally easy as my To Be Read is never ending! I currently have almost thirty books out from the library and my reservation list is somewhat longer! So, I just had to have a quick browse on my library account to come up with some of the books I’m most excited to read over the next few months!

The Binding by Bridget Collins

Despite not knowing too much about the plot of this one, I ordered this from the library pretty quickly. After all the bookstagram hype and that gorgeous cover, it seems like one I’ll enjoy. I actually have this on my shelf right now, and as it slots under the genres of fantasy and historical fiction, I can’t wait to get reading! 

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

After reading (and loving!) The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, I’ve wanted to make a more conscious effort to read more books by and/or about women of colour. Queenie is about a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London. Described as a mix of Bridget Jones and Americanah (another one on my TBR!) this seems like it’ll tick all my boxes. 

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Once again the bookstagram hype has got to me and so I’m waiting impatiently for my library reservation to arrive! This seems like a mix between What Maisie Knew and Almost Famous but, regardless, the late sixties rock music scene premise seems really engaging. 

Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

I’m cheating a little here including a ‘duology’ but I’m excited to read both! I’ve heard really good things about Leigh Bardugo’s books so I’ve decided to jump in with Six of Crows, a YA fantasy novel with really good reviews on Goodreads!

The Truth About Keeping Secrets by Savannah Brown

As a big YouTube nerd, I’ve been aware of Savannah for many years as she has been involved with the British YouTube community. But, for the last few years, her creativity has focused on writing and so it is with much anticipation that her debut novel has finally been released! A YA mystery thriller, it looks set to be an intense read and I cannot wait.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

I’m really not much for crime or mystery books usually, but after the insane amount of chatter about Seven Deaths, I’ve decided to give it a go. I’m a little way in and while it is definitely intriguing I’m not fully hooked yet. It’s quite a chunky read so if I’m not engaged soon I might have to abandon it. It appears to be a sort of murder mystery type book, but apparently, there’s a twist. So, with the good reviews its got, I shall persevere for the time being!

Louis & Louise by Julie Cohen

What a striking cover! And a striking premise to match. It is as follows: Louis and Louise are the same person born in two different lives. Separated only by the sex announced by the doctor and a final ‘e’. They have the same best friends, the same red hair, the same dream of being a writer, the same excellent whistle. They both suffer one catastrophic night, with life-changing consequences.

Spring by Ali Smith

Ali Smith’s seasonal books are always incredibly popular at the library. So much so, I haven’t actually read any yet. However, I’ve decided it would be fun to read Spring in actual Spring this year, to see what all the fuss is about. It’s not yet been released but once it does it perhaps will start to feel a little more spring-like.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

There’s been a lot of hype about this one too, and so I’ve avoided learning too much about the plot. The only problem I realised when I saw it in a book shop is just how long it is. This book is a brick! So while I like fantasy, I hope the writing lives up to the hype, or it may be a struggle to finish.

Lanny by Max Porter

Lanny seems to have MunMun vibes, with some fantasy/magical realism elements been reported, so seems up my street!

It’s got great reviews and the premise sounds really cool too: There’s a village sixty miles outside London. It’s no different from many other villages in England: one pub, one church, red-brick cottages, council cottages and a few bigger houses dotted about. Voices rise up, as they might do anywhere, speaking of loving and needing and working and dying and walking the dogs.

This village belongs to the people who live in it and to the people who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England’s mysterious past and its confounding present. But it also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort, a figure schoolchildren used to draw green and leafy, choked by tendrils growing out of his mouth. 

Dead Papa Toothwort is awake. He is listening to this twenty-first-century village, to his English symphony. He is listening, intently, for a mischievous, enchanting boy whose parents have recently made the village their home. Lanny.
