TV Shows You Probably Haven’t Watched, But Totally Should #1

tv shows, remotes, netflix

I watch a lot of TV.

Let me repeat that, I watch a lot of TV. I’ve been obsessed with TV since I was young, and even had a daily blog for a few years where I would review TV shows and movies.

Don’t underestimate my binging abilities.

But we all know about the Stranger Things, Killing Eve and Game of Thrones shows that everyone and their mother has heard of. Of course, I could chat all day about these shows. But, they don’t need any help in getting viewers.

Instead, I wanted to write a post about the TV shows which aren’t getting enough attention. They are just as good, if not better than the mainstream shows, and are worth so much more love.

However, when I sat down and started to list the shows I wanted to talk about I quickly had over 30 titles! I realised instead of cramming them all in here, I’d break it up a little and turn this into a series. Here are the first 10 shows that you should start watching ASAP.

So, if you’re in need of some Netflix recommendations, look no further! I’ve got you covered.

For fans of:

Stranger Things

The Missing

Watch on: Netflix

Dark

I still can’t believe Dark hasn’t hit the mainstream as it deserves to be up there with the best! It is a german time travel drama and it is so addictive! I honestly don’t want to say a single thing more in case of spoilers.

If you watch one show from this list – make it this one! Season 2 was recently released and I am obsessed! It is now one of my favourite shows of all time.

The Hook-Up Plan

This is a soft french rom-com drama and it filled my heart with joy!

Elsa is going through a tough break up, so her friends come up with a crazy idea. Let’s set her up with someone to get her mind off of him! Only thing is, he’s an escort.

It’s funny and sweet and set in Paris – what more could you want!

Blind Date (highly recommended!)

Watch on: Netflix

Sex Education

Watch on: Amazon Prime

Please Like Me

This series guys. I was laughing one minute, sobbing the next. Please Like Me is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. It’s an Australian comedy drama, featuring Josh (real life comedian) who realises he is gay. The characters are so strong, the chemistry in the friendship group is on fire. It has the most heart I’ve ever seen.

Anyone seen Hannah Gadsby’s Stand Up special ‘Nanette‘ on Netflix? She steals every scene she is in!

Elite

Elite is a Spanish drama set in a private school where three working class teens join the class and turn the school upside down.

As may be clear from the blood in the promo, there is a murder. But I shall say no more!

Super addictive, glossy and romantic.

Easy

Easy is an anthology comedy drama series. Intertwining stories of love and friendship, each episode we focus on a certain set of characters. It stars incredible actors such as Dave Franco, Elizabeth Reaser and Marc Maron and each episode is a perfectly crafted story. What is so special about the show is that each season it builds and builds as we dip in and out of these stories, returning to them like old friends checking in with their lives. Beautifully filmed and a masterclass in acting, Easy is a stand out Netflix original series.

Can't Cope Won't Cope

This is awkward relatable comedy drama at it’s best. And as Irish as can be. Starring two fantastic female leads this follows Aisling as she tries to be an adult in the world of work and play. Plus the complexities of female friendship are thoroughly explored. A lot of fun, but be prepared for some cringe along the way!

(There’s no good trailer for this show, could only find this clip, sorry!)

Ku'damm 56

If you like your historical dramas then this the perfect next watch for you. This German 1950s drama focuses on three sisters and their mother who run a dancing school.

Things soon get complicated in love and dance. It’s a fun easy watch that will leave you clamouring for more.

Osmosis

Osmosis is a french sci-fi drama with strong Black Mirror vibes. It’s kind of dark but a super interesting concept with thrilling tension all the way through.

If you’re looking for some new sci-fi give it a go.

Black Mirror

The OA

Watch on: Netflix

thirteen, tv

For fans of:

Killing Eve

Three Girls

Doctor Foster

Watch on: BBC iPlayer

Thirteen

Not too get all hipster on you… but I, like, totally knew Jodie Comer before Killing Eve. Yes, it was Thirteen back in 2016 that introduced me to her extraordinary acting abilities. Not only that, but the storyline itself is absolutely gripping. If you missed it the first time, catch up ASAP!

Skam

OK I lied. This is my absolute favourite. My life literally changed after watching Skam, I still have it as my phone background and there is no going back.

If you’re wondering what Skam is I could write an essay about how much I love it. It all started in Norway as a revolutionary show screened in real time along with social media updates, as if the characters are real and actually happening. But the awesome format isn’t why it is so popular. No, it is largely due to season 3 of the Norwegian drama which introduced the world to the heart-breaking romance of Isak and Even. Since then remakes have popped up all over the world, and I’ve done my best to keep on top of them. My favourites so far have been Skam Espana (Spain) and Druck (German)!

If you’re ready for a serious binge of epic proportions click the link. Feel free to contact me about Skam anytime! I can’t fangirl enough about it!

skam, tv

Also the trailers are always super weird, but that’s because they are filming the show as it airs and the creators use it as a way of getting creative. At least you can see some of the incredible (good-looking) actors though!

For fans of:

Skins

Misfits

Shameless

Watch on: Uhhh, all over. Try here and here and here and here and here.

That’s all for today, but I’ll be back with more recommendations next week!

Until then I’ve got lots of other recommendations of the book variety!

  1. Great recommendations. These are definitely shows I haven’t heard of and sound like I’ll enjoy. I’ll be checking them out!

  2. Thanks @sepiareads! Hope you enjoy!

  3. Thanks for the great recs! I’ll surely go check these out – especially the Hook – up plan!

    1. Yay! Hope you like it! 🙂

  4. So out of curiosity (and without me going out of my way to actually look into this in any way….my apologies), where are you located and what version of Netflix are you using? US? I’m sure its your entire point, but I haven’t heard of many of these or seen these while browsing Netflix. The only one I have seen and started watching is Dark. I don’t mind watching things that are off the beaten path so I’m excited to watch some new content!

    1. No worries at all! I live in the UK! I probably should have mentioned sorry! But a lot of the Netflix shows I recommended are Netflix originals so will hopefully be available via Netflix wherever you are!
      How are you finding Dark?
Hope you find something new you like 🙂
